With individuals that possess extraordinary traits and abilities, even though they make up a small percentage of the total human population, they represent individuals with tremendous power, even if such power resides only on the philosophical or perceptual level. Because of this perception, the power that individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities are believed to possess can be great. If people believe that one particular group is more powerful than another, or that the second group is somehow inferior, people will act accordingly to such a belief. And belief can be a powerful tool to be used against someone, either by others or by the actual believer, even if such a belief is unjustified and opens that person up to manipulation.
But regardless of if individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities actually possess such great power, or such a fact only resides in a person’s head, this power only rests in the hands of a small percentage of people, which in turn can cause others to become scared. The people who tend to be scared are those who don’t possess extraordinary traits and abilities in the first place, though, on occasion, people who possess extraordinary traits and abilities can also be scared by the abilities they possess. This fear comes out of the idea that such traits and abilities can’t be controlled and people who have them are unpredictable. In addition to this, people who possess extraordinary traits and abilities didn’t obtain them through religion, the state, or other socially acceptable mediums of control. And finally, those who don’t possess extraordinary traits and abilities perceive themselves as being put at a disadvantage by those who do and believe that they will eventually become subjugated because of it. With those who possess extraordinary traits and abilities and are scared by such a fact, this fear emanates more out of the sense of insecurity than anything else; that they won’t be able to adequately control their trait or ability and will be overcome by it, doing unjust harm because of it. True, some people with extraordinary traits and abilities can be unpredictable, but this shouldn’t be extrapolated and be applied to the rest of the community with extraordinary traits and abilities because humanity as a whole is unpredictable, regardless of if they possess extraordinary abilities or not.
Despite this fact, it is because of fear and insecurity that cause the general public to be negative in nature toward those with extraordinary traits and abilities. Besides this fear and insecurity, these individuals are also intimidated by the very nature of extraordinary traits and abilities themselves. It’s not necessarily the individuals that possess them that people fear, but what they have at their disposal. It’s similar in nature to the fear surrounding nuclear weapons or of a nuclear conflict during the Cold War; people weren’t scared by the fact that the Soviets or Americans possessed nuclear warheads but of the nuclear warhead itself. An object that could cause massive destruction in an instant and the uncertainty of if it would be used is what led to mass fear in people. The same thing holds with extraordinary traits and abilities; that they can cause great harm in an instant and people don’t know when they will be used.
However, some of those who harbor ill will toward individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities do so because they are left wanting. They are jealous that other people have been granted extraordinary traits and abilities whereas they have been left out in the cold without any of their own. Because they believe that they’ve been left out, they become angry. They don’t understand why they don’t have any extraordinary traits or abilities of their own, despite the fact that they desperately want them. This leaves them feeling inadequate, and the only way they can deal with this is by lashing out against those who actually possess extraordinary traits and abilities.
Despite all of those who are hostile toward individuals who possess extraordinary traits and abilities, there are those who are content with people possessing them as long as these individuals use their traits and abilities responsibly. This means that they should only use their traits and abilities under very specific circumstances. But the moment when individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities cross the line and decide to take on the mantle of a hero is when these individuals have a problem with those with extraordinary traits and abilities. Even if the individual with extraordinary traits and abilities feel compelled to do something good for society simply because they have these abilities can be seen as too much and taking things too far. This is because the average person is forced to entrust individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities with their safety, people they have no business entrusting their safety to, taking away even more power away from the average person. Even trusting others without extraordinary traits and abilities can be difficult for some because they are intrusting strangers with their safety. Even though they may understand the necessity of the situation, they are still forced to involuntarily sacrifice something, and that is inherently displeasing, upsetting, and uncomfortable. And when someone with extraordinary traits and abilities takes on the mantle of a hero, especially outside that of law enforcement or military, that individual is seen as going too far, forcing people to further entrust their safety and security to others, taking even more power away from them.
And through these “heroes,” it is easy for people to attribute the same sense of insecurity to the rest of those who possess extraordinary traits and abilities. This is due to the fact that these “superheroes” are in the public eye, making them easy to identify, and from there, easy to attribute the same sense of insecurity to the rest of the community that possess extraordinary traits and abilities. And because these “heroes” work outside of the law and the established system, it forces the general public to enter a state of terror.
It is from this sense of terror that can explain why there are those who are against individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities. From these individuals’ perspectives, people with extraordinary traits and abilities are inadvertent terrorists. With the experiencing of fear, it can be an enjoyable sensation, but only under the right circumstances and for a limited amount of time. This is why people watch horror films and engage in thrill-seeking activities; they gain enjoyment out of it. However, if it goes on for too long, it will become uncomfortable and will no longer be enjoyable. With horror stories and thrill-seeking activities, they last for only a short period of time and the person engaging in it has some level of control, even if it’s in the knowledge that they can leave at any time or they aren’t in any eminent danger. But once you remove them from their sense of control, the thrill of being scared will no longer be there. And when people are scared, they will do whatever they can to no longer experience that sensation, something that is due to simple human nature.
That can explain why the majority of people act the way that they do toward those with extraordinary traits and abilities. By gaining control over those with extraordinary traits and abilities, they are able to gain control over the fear which they are experiencing. However, there are those who take a stance against those with extraordinary traits and abilities out of simple human hatred. In this situation, these individuals can’t accept those with extraordinary traits and abilities simply because they are different. These people have a pathological need that cannot be satisfied by any other means than to express hatred or severe dislike toward another human being, a particular group, or a community of people that fail to satisfy some arbitrary set of standards that is less then concrete. And it is very unlikely that the person can list or identify what these standards are, but that they know they exist and can identify them once seeing it. And those who don’t satisfy this standard must be opposed vehemently.
But there are some out there who need to come up with some kind of reason to justify their position against those with extraordinary traits and abilities. Some of them use the fact that the Nazis used these individuals as propaganda tools and soldiers as an excuse to take a stance against them. Some don’t even go through this effort to come up with a reason. They are just morally offended by the fact that they exist. Somehow, individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities violate their standards of morality and need to be taken care of immediately.
Regardless of the reason, individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities find themselves at the receiving end of social persecution. And when faced with this constant persecution, people with extraordinary traits and abilities will naturally react with hostility of their own which allows for the creation of a feedback loop that only exacerbates the entire situation. Even though the feelings can be understandable, as well as being warranted at times, it is important to try and put ones fears in check. Otherwise, it will only result in unnecessary bloodshed for everyone involved.
