Xerek Files: Entry Number Three – [Public Attitudes]

With individuals that possess extraordinary traits and abilities, even though they make up a small percentage of the total human population, they represent individuals with tremendous power, even if such power resides only on the philosophical or perceptual level.  Because of this perception, the power that individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities are believed to possess can be great.  If people believe that one particular group is more powerful than another, or that the second group is somehow inferior, people will act accordingly to such a belief.  And belief can be a powerful tool to be used against someone, either by others or by the actual believer, even if such a belief is unjustified and opens that person up to manipulation.

But regardless of if individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities actually possess such great power, or such a fact only resides in a person’s head, this power only rests in the hands of a small percentage of people, which in turn can cause others to become scared.  The people who tend to be scared are those who don’t possess extraordinary traits and abilities in the first place, though, on occasion, people who possess extraordinary traits and abilities can also be scared by the abilities they possess.  This fear comes out of the idea that such traits and abilities can’t be controlled and people who have them are unpredictable.  In addition to this, people who possess extraordinary traits and abilities didn’t obtain them through religion, the state, or other socially acceptable mediums of control.  And finally, those who don’t possess extraordinary traits and abilities perceive themselves as being put at a disadvantage by those who do and believe that they will eventually become subjugated because of it.  With those who possess extraordinary traits and abilities and are scared by such a fact, this fear emanates more out of the sense of insecurity than anything else; that they won’t be able to adequately control their trait or ability and will be overcome by it, doing unjust harm because of it.  True, some people with extraordinary traits and abilities can be unpredictable, but this shouldn’t be extrapolated and be applied to the rest of the community with extraordinary traits and abilities because humanity as a whole is unpredictable, regardless of if they possess extraordinary abilities or not.

Despite this fact, it is because of fear and insecurity that cause the general public to be negative in nature toward those with extraordinary traits and abilities.  Besides this fear and insecurity, these individuals are also intimidated by the very nature of extraordinary traits and abilities themselves.  It’s not necessarily the individuals that possess them that people fear, but what they have at their disposal.  It’s similar in nature to the fear surrounding nuclear weapons or of a nuclear conflict during the Cold War; people weren’t scared by the fact that the Soviets or Americans possessed nuclear warheads but of the nuclear warhead itself.  An object that could cause massive destruction in an instant and the uncertainty of if it would be used is what led to mass fear in people.  The same thing holds with extraordinary traits and abilities; that they can cause great harm in an instant and people don’t know when they will be used.

However, some of those who harbor ill will toward individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities do so because they are left wanting.  They are jealous that other people have been granted extraordinary traits and abilities whereas they have been left out in the cold without any of their own.  Because they believe that they’ve been left out, they become angry.  They don’t understand why they don’t have any extraordinary traits or abilities of their own, despite the fact that they desperately want them.  This leaves them feeling inadequate, and the only way they can deal with this is by lashing out against those who actually possess extraordinary traits and abilities.

Despite all of those who are hostile toward individuals who possess extraordinary traits and abilities, there are those who are content with people possessing them as long as these individuals use their traits and abilities responsibly.  This means that they should only use their traits and abilities under very specific circumstances.  But the moment when individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities cross the line and decide to take on the mantle of a hero is when these individuals have a problem with those with extraordinary traits and abilities.  Even if the individual with extraordinary traits and abilities feel compelled to do something good for society simply because they have these abilities can be seen as too much and taking things too far.  This is because the average person is forced to entrust individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities with their safety, people they have no business entrusting their safety to, taking away even more power away from the average person.  Even trusting others without extraordinary traits and abilities can be difficult for some because they are intrusting strangers with their safety.  Even though they may understand the necessity of the situation, they are still forced to involuntarily sacrifice something, and that is inherently displeasing, upsetting, and uncomfortable.  And when someone with extraordinary traits and abilities takes on the mantle of a hero, especially outside that of law enforcement or military, that individual is seen as going too far, forcing people to further entrust their safety and security to others, taking even more power away from them.

And through these “heroes,” it is easy for people to attribute the same sense of insecurity to the rest of those who possess extraordinary traits and abilities.  This is due to the fact that these “superheroes” are in the public eye, making them easy to identify, and from there, easy to attribute the same sense of insecurity to the rest of the community that possess extraordinary traits and abilities.  And because these “heroes” work outside of the law and the established system, it forces the general public to enter a state of terror.

It is from this sense of terror that can explain why there are those who are against individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities.  From these individuals’ perspectives, people with extraordinary traits and abilities are inadvertent terrorists.  With the experiencing of fear, it can be an enjoyable sensation, but only under the right circumstances and for a limited amount of time.  This is why people watch horror films and engage in thrill-seeking activities; they gain enjoyment out of it.  However, if it goes on for too long, it will become uncomfortable and will no longer be enjoyable.  With horror stories and thrill-seeking activities, they last for only a short period of time and the person engaging in it has some level of control, even if it’s in the knowledge that they can leave at any time or they aren’t in any eminent danger.  But once you remove them from their sense of control, the thrill of being scared will no longer be there.  And when people are scared, they will do whatever they can to no longer experience that sensation, something that is due to simple human nature.

That can explain why the majority of people act the way that they do toward those with extraordinary traits and abilities.  By gaining control over those with extraordinary traits and abilities, they are able to gain control over the fear which they are experiencing.  However, there are those who take a stance against those with extraordinary traits and abilities out of simple human hatred.  In this situation, these individuals can’t accept those with extraordinary traits and abilities simply because they are different.  These people have a pathological need that cannot be satisfied by any other means than to express hatred or severe dislike toward another human being, a particular group, or a community of people that fail to satisfy some arbitrary set of standards that is less then concrete.  And it is very unlikely that the person can list or identify what these standards are, but that they know they exist and can identify them once seeing it.  And those who don’t satisfy this standard must be opposed vehemently.

But there are some out there who need to come up with some kind of reason to justify their position against those with extraordinary traits and abilities.  Some of them use the fact that the Nazis used these individuals as propaganda tools and soldiers as an excuse to take a stance against them.  Some don’t even go through this effort to come up with a reason.  They are just morally offended by the fact that they exist.  Somehow, individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities violate their standards of morality and need to be taken care of immediately.

Regardless of the reason, individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities find themselves at the receiving end of social persecution.  And when faced with this constant persecution, people with extraordinary traits and abilities will naturally react with hostility of their own which allows for the creation of a feedback loop that only exacerbates the entire situation.  Even though the feelings can be understandable, as well as being warranted at times, it is important to try and put ones fears in check.  Otherwise, it will only result in unnecessary bloodshed for everyone involved.

Xerek Files: Entry Number Two – [Cultural Perspective]

One of the greatest debates over extraordinary traits and abilities has to do with their origins.  This debate not only exists in the realm of science, but in the general public as well.  In the scientific field, the current consensus is that they are genetic alterations that developed within Homo sapiens.  In the general public, however, what can be described as a lively debate is going on, despite the fact that it consists of nothing more than speculation without any form of evidence to support their claims.

The first claim to arise from this public debate is that these individuals emerged out of the Collective Consciousness.  With this belief, it comes out of the idea that there is a level of consciousness generated by all human beings that connects everyone to each other that can’t be directly or consciously experienced by any one individual, but never the less exists, and is what allows certain individuals to manifest extraordinary traits and abilities.  Some even claim that all sentient beings are a part of this collective consciousness and have their own part to play in it.  Some of these other sentient beings, as claimed by some of those who support this idea, are chimpanzees, elephants, dolphins, whales, gorillas, and orangutans.  Some have even claimed that domestic canine breeds play a small role in this collective consciousness due to their intimate relationship with humanity.  Proponents of this position claim that, through this collective consciousness, some form of power matrix is formed and establishes the source of power for these traits and abilities and is what allows them to function.  Even though this Collective Consciousness can be attributed to anyone who possesses extraordinary traits and abilities, it is most often applied and attributed to individuals who possess psionic abilities.  This is due to the fact that psionic abilities are powered and controlled by the brain, something that isn’t fully understood by the average human being.  And there are others who claim that it is the mind, the philosophical representation of the brain, and not the brain itself, that allows psionic abilities to work.  In addition to this, proponents claim that the mind is generally considered a mysterious entity and will never be fully understood, making psionics those who are beyond complete understanding.

The second claim is that individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities are the Defenders of Reality.  This idea originates from the belief that the fabric of existence is being assaulted by an outside and unforeseen force or agent that wants to destroy existence.  However, those who possess extraordinary traits and abilities exist to prevent this unforeseen force from succeeding and destroying reality.  But despite their role in defending existence, some claims exist stating that some individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities have been corrupted, converted, or tricked into aiding the unforeseen force in destroying the fabric of reality.  These agents of the unforeseen force are what lead to individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities to so readily fight each other.  Among those who support this idea, there are some who still fear and mistrust individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities.  However, they see these individuals as a necessary evil, so will tend to tolerate them.  If they didn’t, and individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities disappeared, reality will cease to exist, causing that person’s existence to also come to an end.  And out of all those with extraordinary traits and abilities, psionics have been claimed to hold a special place in protecting reality because of their mental abilities, allowing them to have a special bond with the fabric itself that holds reality together.  This in turn allows them to have an advantage in protecting it.

The third claim states that extraordinary traits and abilities are a Gift of the Gods.  They believe that the only possible answer for extraordinary traits and abilities is through supernatural means, not natural ones.  Regardless of if the person believes in one god or many, proponents claim that extraordinary traits and abilities were bestowed upon selected individuals by a supernatural being or beings.  Because extraordinary traits and abilities have been bestowed upon others by superior beings, proponents claim that those with extraordinary traits and abilities have a moral obligation to use them properly.  If they fail to do so, they will have to pay the price and repercussions for their transgressions by the supernatural beings who gave it to them.  However, there are those who claim that instead of being a gift from God, they are a Gift of the Devil so that individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities can act as the Devil’s agents on Earth so that the world can be prepared for His arrival while others state that extraordinary traits and abilities are the Curse of God for either the individual’s past digressions or because of the sins of the father.

But not all the claims surrounding individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities are based upon the supernatural.  Some are just based upon personal opinion about those with extraordinary traits and abilities.  The first of these are that individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities are Less than Human.  With this argument, the proponents of this position claim that, even though the individuals that possess extraordinary traits and abilities may appear to be human, and can act accordingly, they are actually corruptions of the human form.  Because of this corruption, these people believe that the true nature of individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities are below that of ordinary human beings, disqualifying them of being considered human.  Because of this inherent inferiority, the proponents of this position see no need in respecting individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities or treating them with basic human dignity.  To them, these individuals are to be used for their personal gain or simply hunted for sport.

On the reverse side of this, there are those who claim that individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities are More than Human.  Proponents of this claim say that those with extraordinary traits and abilities are the next step in human evolution and represent the future of humanity.  This is marked by what they call “their advanced genetic sequence.”  Because of their genetic disposition, they claim that it puts them above and beyond that of the ordinary human being, making them superhuman.  For them, those with extraordinary traits and abilities will eventually prove that god, or gods, to be unnecessary.  They are partially correct with this sentiment, that those with extraordinary traits and abilities are the product of human evolution.  However, these alterations to their genetic sequence are nothing more than adaptive consequences to their environment.

The final claim that has been obtained is that individuals with extraordinary traits and abilities come from an Alternate Plane of Existence.  Because they come from a plane of existence other than our own, these individuals are not necessarily supernatural in nature, though it is generally accepted to be true.  It is because they are from an alternate plane of existence that allows their extraordinary traits and abilities to form in the first place.  Supporters of this position never state if these individuals possess their traits and abilities before crossing over or if they obtain them upon arriving, they just believe that since they are from another plane of existence, they have such traits and abilities that are above and beyond that of the average human being.  There’s even a claim that states that these beings don’t bring their physical bodies over when they cross but just their essences and it is their essences that occupies a human host.  This in turn grants the human host extraordinary traits and abilities.  And because these individuals possess extraordinary traits and abilities, they are, or become, semi-divine in nature.
